Comment from a happy owner of the Champion Oomo Showa |
|
I have now been koi hunting in Niigata on four occasions. The first
time I experienced the Ikeage was in October 2006. I witnessed several
mud pond harvests and even helped (a little) with the harvesting of an
NND mud pond. I had not been keeping koi long then and it was my first
trip to Japan. I was amazed by everything I saw. The effect is still the
same. The sight of beautifully coloured koi emerging from murky water is
still entrancing. This harvesting event takes place within the picturesque
mountains of Niigata. The setting could not be improved upon. Each time
is like the first. It is a wondrous thing. |

Also in 2006, I was present when NND opened its new facility in Takiya.
I was allowed to help release the first koi into the indoor ponds. Fujio
Oomo, Makoto Taneka, Yasuaki Kaneko and Tamikazu Kobyashi were justifiably
proud. This was the result following much endeavour and was a big step
forward for them.

I have purchased koi from NND each year, and in 2007 bought a very
beautiful and high class Oomo showa. She has been successful in Niigata,
having won the Best in Size 60Bu and 70Bu at the Nougyosai Show in 2006
and 2007. She was later runner up Grand Champion at the All Nagaoka Show
in 2008. Recently, she was Grand Champion at the East Midlands Koi Club
Winter Show in February 2010. This was the very first UK show held in the
winter time. I am delighted that the first Grand Champion was a showa,
that she was bred by Fujio Oomo – and that she belongs to me!

I am sure Jonathon Atkin of Allandale Koi is also pleased with this result. I have visited Japan with him on all four of my trips, and have travelled far and wide in Niigata, visiting a large number of breeders throughout the region. I have always been made welcome at every breeder. I have seen a vast array of koi and have even been able to bring a few of these wonderful things home to enjoy in my own pond.
I am happy to be associated with Fujio and his colleagues at NND. They have worked hard and long to make their joint venture a success by producing better and better koi. I hope that the success of my showa in Japan and in now the UK will encourage them to continue. I know this recent award has made a number of UK koi keepers interested and curious. Perhaps Oomo showa and NND will now receive more attention and their business will be promoted in consequence.
